A large part of society nowadays is gaming, with
everyone seeming to participate in one form or another: whether it’s in the
form of apps on their iPhones, or logging in online engaged
in multiplayer games on their computers, Xbox or PlayStation.
Gaming provides people with a distraction from work,
responsibilities or their troubles. Of course gaming is inherently meant
to be about entertainment, but with the high level of engagement that is now
being observed, it has to be considered a form of escapism from the more
mundane day to day tasks that are considered boring. Gaming is more accessible
now than it has ever been as it is provided as mobile entertainment
through mobile phones, iPads and portable lap top computers.
Gaming is now an accepted part of our culture and everyday lives, with even
toddlers participating. For example my two and three year old cousins both have
an iPad each especially devoted to their games: once the television was
considered the ‘psuedo baby sitter’, these days iPads with games seem to have
become the norm. If my baby cousins are anything to go by, it is what they
spend most of their time playing!
Games these days are heavily reliant upon an online
culture with people from all over the world talking and communicating with each
other without ever having met beforehand. Online gaming now also gives people
the opportunity to create relationships with people, who casually chat while
playing.
While gaming is now a large part of our society and
culture there are people who have now become very reliant on gaming to provide
their element of social communication. While gaming can provide social
communication with other people from around the world it is important to note
that it is not a replacement for face to face communication. There are some
people who become so engrossed in gaming that they forget about all their other
responsibilities, friends and family.
Gaming
has become an accepted part of our society, with almost everyone participating
even if all they play is Candy Crush.
Games are used as a pass time, to interact with other people and even as a
distraction from everyday problems. Gaming is fun and interactive allowing the
gamer total control over the entire environment, something that is not possible
with everyday life. However, there are some people who get so caught up in
gaming that they forget everything else and they even can sometimes forget what
kinds of behaviour are considered socially acceptable. While gaming is fun it’s
important to always remember that there are other important things that can
occupy our time.
Interesting Blog. Your definitions of 'gaming' were important and helped guide your blog. I too agree that gaming has become an accepted part of society as i too am surrounded by young cousins who know how to work iPad's better then i do! I think you could of used some scholarly references, such as the reading from this week to support your ideas? Other then that, a great blog!
ReplyDeleteHello, after reading your blog I have noticed some interesting points proposed within. I felt as though when reading your blog, you constantly generalized in your statements regarding gaming and gamers, that started to get repetitive throughout the blog. Also, on this note, you really should look into acquiring at least one or two scholarly references to support and reinforce your propositions and ideas. On a further note, to meet another requirement of the criterion, you should think about adding in an image to help the audience to understand your ideas providing some visual stimulus; and add a link about your ideas too. Other than that, it was an easy to understand and read blog.
ReplyDeleteHi Jasmin,
ReplyDeleteI would be very interested to see if this was able to be expanded upon for your major piece, as I think you raise some valid points about both the upsides and downsides of the gaming world. For this blog piece in particular it would have been great to see some imagery and links to articles that back up your contention, given there seems to be a lack of scholarly sources. Keep in mind the fact you mentioned gaming's ability to help people build relationships with others from across the world as a topic to expand upon if you go with this piece for your major article.
Well done
Hey Jasmin, you put forward your perspective of gaming really well and using your family as an example was good. But it was the only one you used and I think your piece needed a few more as well as some scholarly sources to back up you opinion. It is a bit plain and a photo or two could’ve spiced it up a bit. You have brought to light many things about the gaming culture even though you generalised a bit but I enjoyed reading your take on it. You have done a good job raising many points on the gaming scene and the way you structured it was pretty good. Well done.
ReplyDeleteHi Jas,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your post but found it slightly repetitive and very generalised. Many people these days make a living from gaming and participating in competitions all over the world that can make them a lot of money. There is a lot of culture that comes from gaming including how people dress and interact. It's true that many people can get extremely involved in a game but the same can be said about television shows and how people react to them. It's a phenomena and the way that many civilizations are becoming a part of. I do, though, agree about young children constantly being in their iPads and not out riding their bikes... Back in my day!..
I would have liked to see at least one scholarly article too.
